What is a Domain?
The Domain Name System (DNS) helps users to find their way around
the Internet. Every computer on the Internet has a unique address – just like
a telephone number – which is a rather complicated string of numbers. It is
called its "IP address" (IP stands for "Internet Protocol").
But it is hard to remember everyone's
IP address. The DNS makes it easier by allowing a familiar string of letters
(the "domain name") to be used instead of the arcane IP address. So instead
of typing 192.0.34.65, you can type kz900.com.
It is a "mnemonic" device that makes addresses easier to remember.
Translating the name into the
IP address is called "resolving the domain name." The goal of the DNS is for
any Internet user any place in the world to reach a specific website IP address
by entering its domain name. Domain names are also used for reaching e-mail
addresses and for other Internet applications.
What is FTP?
File Transfer Protocol (FTP), a standard Internet protocol, is
the simplest way to exchange files between computers on the Internet. Like the
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which transfers displayable Web pages and
related files, and the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), which transfers
e-mail, FTP is an application protocol that uses the Internet's TCP/IP protocols.
FTP is commonly used to transfer Web page files from their creator (upload files)
to the computer that acts as their server for everyone on the Internet. It's
also commonly used to download programs and other files to your computer from
other servers.
What is Web Hosting?
Web hosting is a server (computer) that stores web pages, pictures,
movies and other files for hosting web sites. Just like this web site KZ900.com
(http://kz900.com) is stored on a web server
in Canada but our store location is in Minnesota, USA. Pictures stored here
are accessible if you were to add pictures to an auction you could show your
pictures off on the auction to make your product sell.
